Exciting news! Several online news sources are reporting a fourth installment in the Resident Evil trilogy is indeed planned, and (according to MovieWeb) for a November 2009 release at that! Milla is also rumored to reprise the role of Alice in the film, although there are speculations as to what extent Alice will be included in the storyline of the upcoming film; as most of you will know, the third installment Resident Evil: Extinction left a hologram of Alice and a hoard of her clones threatening the Tokyo branch of the Umbrella Corporation.

Although no official sources have to my knowledge confirmed the sequel, Resident Evil writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson has touched on the subject in many a recent interview, and now movie sites are beginning to treat the discussed and as-of-yet untitled sequel as confirmed. Some excerpts from recent online reports:

MovieWeb.com: “Milla Jovovich is set to reprise her signature role as Alice in this fourth installment, which takes off where Resident Evil: Afterlife ended in Japan.”

SundaySun.co.uk: “Paul may be enjoying being a dad, but he is already busy with plans for several films, including a return to his most popular franchise, Resident Evil. He added: ‘I’m writing an adaptation of the Long Good Friday right now, set in present-day Miami. Then I will probably write Resident Evil 4.’”

io9: “Are We Going To See An Army Of Alices?
Anderson: We’re in very early discussions about all of it, so it’s not a definite thing by any means. Milla would like to return, and I would certainly like to see the franchise continue. Last year there were, I think, eight ‘threequels’ got released. — There were only two where the third movie did better than the second movie. That was Bourne Ultimatum and Resident Evil. So, you know, it is quite an achievement for a franchise to keep growing like that, and we all feel that the audience is excited to see another one clearly. We would like, if we could put it together, we would do it.”

MTV.com: “Resident Evil: Extinction, the third video-game to big screen adaptation in the popular series will likely not be the last, Anderson said, although talks for a fourth film are still in the very earliest stages of development. ‘I’m just starting to talk to Sony about it,’ Anderson confessed.’I don’t even know if anything will come of it, but there’s a possibility it might happen.’”

Since so many news sources are confident the fourth sequel will happen, I have decided to add it to her upcoming projects as “rumored”. Naturally, we’ll keep you posted on the film and its progress, if any. What do you think — would you go see another Resident Evil film, with or without Milla?
