What is your favourite item in your wardrobe?
A cashmere shawl. I love it because you can put it over anything and feel beautiful and glamorous like you’re floating on a sand dune.

What is your fall-back outfit?
A thin Balenciaga trench coat that you can wear as a dress. It’s elegant and beautiful and you can wear it anywhere.

What is your one piece of fashion or beauty advice?
Very few people can wear crazy things all together and pull it off. Be on the conservative side: if you have an amazing scarf, make that the centrepiece.

Biggest fashion faux pas?
All mistakes are glorious because they lead to amazing creations. If you take risks you make big, beautiful mistakes. I couldn’t resurrect trousers with stirrups, though.

What aspect of fashion do you hate?
The pressure for women to keep up with trends. So many people wear what’s trendy, even if they’re not sure if they look good in it. Comfort is the No 1 priority. Trust your instincts.

How do you think people perceive you from the way you dress?
People probably think I’m crazy. I’ve had Golden Hanger awards for bad outfits from Joan Rivers. I don’t fully believe it when someone criticises me, and I don’t fully believe it when someone compliments me.

If you could steal anyone’s wardrobe, past or present, fiction or reality, whose would it be and why?
Marianne Faithfull’s and Bianca Jagger’s. And I’d also steal Isabel Archer’s from The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James. I’d steal everything from Edith Wharton’s heroines, and from the little chimney sweeps from Dickens’s novels. I’d love to go into David Bowie’s wardrobe. I’d mix all the clothes from these wardrobes into one of my own.

If you could change one part of your body, which would it be?
I’d have neck extension surgery, and I wouldn’t mind knee-shrinkers.

What are your five desert island staples?
I love luxurious luggage - it makes me feel so special - so I’d take everything in a Samsonite bag. Then, I’d take sunscreen, moisturisers, my guitar, pencils and paper and a really great sarong.

What is a day in the fashion life of Milla Jovovich?
I get up at 7am, play with my baby, feed her, play some more, put her to bed for a nap…It all revolves around her.

Paper (US): “How to Succeed in Fashion - While Really Trying” (2007)

Milla Jovovich and Carmen Hawk owe their new success to hard work. Still, they know they’ve been plenty lucky along the way.

It took a classically cinematic real-life moment to make Milla Jovovich realize how deeply respected she was — as a designer. The model and actress is one half of the team behind Jovovich-Hawk, a fashion line she established in 2003 with her friend Carmen Hawk, a singer, artist and former model. Milla recalls how, on a recent trip to Spain, she learned just how pervasive the Jovovich-Hawk sense of style is. “I walked into the hotel and this girl was checking in,” she says excitedly, recalling how she recognized the super-gorgeous woman at reception as Eugenia Silva, a top Spanish model. “I saw her from the back and I thought, ‘Oh, she looks great. Is she wearing vintage?’ And then I thought, ‘God! I recognize that floral! That’s Country Disco in black — our dress from fall!’” Asked if she spoke to Silva, Milla looks incredulous. “At first I was just looking at her to see what she would do,” she says shyly, going on to explain that the two had a conversation and it turns out the Spaniard owns a boutique in Barcelona that sells Jovovich-Hawk. That’s quite the switch: the movie star recognizing the model.

Resident Evil: Extinction star Milla Jovovich’s jokes are really dated now, but they were funny then. It’s June 2006, and she’s referencing the George Clooney rumors that he demands no underling on any movie set should so much as look at him – “Stare at me! It’s in my contract,” she says. Her director, Russell Mulcahy is laughing at Milla’s playfulness: “What are you on?” he asks.

Milla Jovovich loves being a mutant — a good thing, considering she’s about to become one yet again, as Resident Evil: Extinction is slated to start production Monday (May 15) in Mexico.

“I just love being typecast; it’s my favorite thing ever,” Jovovich joked in a Valley Girl voice (see “Milla Jovovich Makes Her Case For Being Every Geek’s Dream Girl”). But seriously, “I don’t think it would be a great sci-fi action movie if there wasn’t some sort of viral mutation going on. You always have to have some crazy virus that gets out there and suddenly infects people with these strange powers.”

Marie Claire (Spain): “La nueva vida de Milla Jovovich” (2007)

January 5, 2008 – 6:47 pm

Author: Marc Giró
Magazine: Marie Claire (Spain), issue July 2007

BlackBook: “A Place of Their Own” (2007)

January 5, 2008 – 2:41 pm

Author: Dana Thomas
Magazine: BlackBook, issue March 2007

Designers Milla Jovovich and Carmen Hawk are carving their own distinct niche in the overcrowded fashion world, and they’re doing it the old-fashioned way. (Now, if they could only stop finishing each other’s sentences.) Here, a peek into Jovovich’s Manhattan residence, and a preview of what surprises they have in store with their L.A.-based line.

“I don’t mind having people over,” said the actress, makeup spokeswoman, and fashion designer Milla Jovovich, “but I put everything valuable away just in case.” That was last September when the choppy-haired, milky-skinned Jovovich and her equally ravishing design partner Carmen Hawk threw a party for their proto-hippie girl Spring 2007 line in Jovovich’s four-story brownstone in the far-flung West Village.
